The Life Of Maleo Bird In Sanctuary Maleo

BOLMONG, ZONAUTARA.com – The Maleo is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. This bird seem like a chicken has a unique life.

If you want to get closer to see the life of Maleo, you have to come Sanctuary Maleo located in West Pinonobatuan Village, East Dumoga District, Bolaang Mongondow. Sanctuary Maleo is a part of Bogani Nani Warta Bone National Park.

To enter Sanctuary Maleo you have to pay an entrance fee, Rp 5.000 for local visitors, Rp 160.000 for foreign tourists and Rp 375.000 during holidays. And Rp 100.000 for guide service.

In an area of five hectares there are about 1.500-200 pairs of Maleo. Maleo has a unique habit, Maleo female covers each egg in the deep hole of soil or sand and allow the incubation through volcanic heating. The Maleo’s egg is large, about six times as large as that of the domestic chicken.

An interesting moment for tourist when little Maleo start to run. Maleo is monogamous that eat consist seeds, fruit, ants, beetles, mollusk, and small invertebrates.

Sanctuary Maleo is located in Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park. Most of its territory is located in North Sulawesi Province and partly located in Gorontalo Province.

Bogani National Park has the potential of a diverse flora dominated by the ficus (genus) group.
